This includes both UIL student-athletes and students participating in non-UIL activities.
What Is a Concussion?
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that disrupts normal brain function. Symptoms may appear immediately or develop over several hours or days.

Return-to-Learn (RTL) and Return-to-Play (RTP)
Information for Parents & GuardiansAfter a concussion, students recover at different rates. Pewitt CISD follows a gradual process to help students safely return to learning and physical activity. Academic recovery is prioritized, and parents are encouraged to work closely with the school throughout the recovery process.
Return-to-Learn (RTL) – All Students
Return-to-Learn is a gradual return to normal academic activities. Temporary accommodations may be provided until the student can fully participate without concussion-related symptoms.
- Level 1: Relative Cognitive Rest – Limited schoolwork and cognitive activity.
- Level 2: Light Cognitive Activity – Short periods of reading or schoolwork with frequent breaks.
- Level 3: Partial School Attendance – Reduced schedule or workload with accommodations as needed.
- Level 4: Full School Day with Supports – Full attendance with temporary academic supports.
- Level 5: Full Academic Return – Normal assignments, testing, and classroom participation.
Return-to-Activity (RTA) – Non-UIL Students
Students who are not participating in UIL athletics gradually return to physical activity through the District's Return-to-Activity process.
- Step 1: Light Activity
- Step 2: Moderate Activity
- Step 3: Increased Activity
- Step 4: Full Activity Practice
- Step 5: Full Return to Activity
Return-to-Play (RTP) – UIL Student-Athletes
Students participating in UIL athletics must complete the District's Concussion Oversight Team-established Return-to-Play process before returning to unrestricted athletic participation.
Important: A treating physician's written statement allows the student-athlete to BEGIN the District's Return-to-Play progression. It does not authorize immediate return to practice or competition.
- Level 1: Light Aerobic Activity
- Level 2: Moderate Aerobic Activity
- Level 3: Non-Contact Training
- Level 4: Full-Contact Practice
- Level 5: Return to Competition
Important Reminders
- Progression through each level is based on symptom resolution.
- Students should not return to unrestricted physical activity until District requirements have been met.
- Full Return-to-Learn is expected before unrestricted Return-to-Play unless otherwise directed by the treating physician and consistent with District protocol.
- Parents should notify the school immediately if symptoms return or worsen.
